Life in the Garden State is certainly unique; we’re diverse, densely packed and truly have it all. We move at a faster pace, especially on the highway, but do know how to slow down and enjoy all we offer. Though our state isn’t SO different from the rest, there are definitely a few things you won’t be used to. Here are 10 things you learn quickly when you move to New Jersey.
Upsala College was founded in 1893 by the Swedish-American Augustana Synod of the Lutheran Church. Originally located in Brooklyn, it moved to Kenilworth, NJ in 1898. In 1899 it built a new campus there. After becoming a four-year college in 1903, it moved to East Orange, NJ in 1924. During World War II its enrollment peaked at 2,000 students and held at around 1,500 for much of its history. 85% of the faculty held Ph.D degrees. Until the 1960’s it drew its student body from a traditional Lutheran base.
During conscription for World War I many young men were deemed physically unfit to serve the country. As a result, Newark Normal School of Physical Education and Hygiene was founded by Matthias Machery and Randall D. Warden in 1917.

In 1896, Essex County purchased 325 acres of farmland on the border of Verona and Cedar Grove to establish what was then being referred to as the Essex County Asylum for the Insane. Upon its opening, the facility came to be known as Overbrook, due to its positioning just above the Peckman River. Buildings quickly sprang up as part of this complex in close proximity to Fairview Avenue, which was then a dirt road that served as the main thoroughfare of Overbrook.

Opened in 1737 by John Sutton as the Stage House Inn, the tavern served the community as a meeting place for local government and became a central location during the Revolutionary War for patriot conscription. Operated by over two dozen inn keepers in the 18th and 19th century, the Stage House has continued to serve customers and the Scotch Plains community for nearly 280 years.
Over the years Weird NJ had received reports sporadically from the West Milford area of sightings of non-indigenous species of animals, such as monkeys and kangaroos, roaming the woods there. It was always rumored that these were the descendants of escapees from Jungle Habitat. Still, for some reason we never though to actually go to the site of the old abandoned park until this new tip came in.

The site was selected due to its remote, high altitude location, which, it was believed, could provide a healthy, peaceful setting for patients to rehabilitate in.
